Event Details

Taming abrasive manager

It can’t go on… something has to change. You’ve gotten multiple complaints from employees describing how difficult it is to work with this individual. You’ve realized it’s not just a simple personality conflict – it’s a chronic pattern of abrasive behaviour shown toward others, be they subordinates, peers and/or superiors. You’ve tried talking… to the individual, to no avail. You encounter denial: “I’m not abrasive!” or justification of the behaviour “I needed to get my point across!” The abrasive employee may even have acknowledged their destructive style and promised to change their ways, but after a brief period of improvement, the old behaviours return. You value this person’s expertise, but their technical performance is now being overshadowed by their disruptive interpersonal conduct. You feel helpless – and you wonder if the situation is hopeless.

We invite you to join us in Calgary on April 11, 2016 as Sylvie Matteau, LLM, ABW, Partner at ADR Education and Director of The Boss Whispering Institute of Canada presents this special one-day seminar. In addition to her law background, Sylvie has been a mediator, trainer, and coach for over 24 years and was trained directly by Dr. Crawshaw. This is the first time this training has been offered in Alberta.

Designed for managers and human resource professionals, this seminar will give you the tools to “take the bull by the horns” and experience yourself as a supportive manager instead of a misguided “matador.”

What’s one of the toughest jobs managers face?
Managing abrasive employee behaviour is no easy task, and doing it poorly, or failing to do it altogether can have disastrous consequences for your organization, your team, and you. You know what you should do (intervene early, be specific, develop a corrective action plan), but why is it so terribly hard to do it, and what can we do to handle unacceptable employee behaviour calmly, confidently, and expertly?

In Part I of this one-day seminar, you will:

 Learn about the psychological forces that make intervention so challenging, including unconscious fears and predictable defense mechanisms

 Explore understandable resistance to managing abrasive employee behaviour

 Gain insight into the psychodynamics of why employees behave abrasively

 Create a foundation of behavioural expectations for respectful conduct

In Part II, you will learn how to:

 Accurately differentiate between acceptable conflict and unacceptable behaviour

 Intervene calmly and confidently with abrasive employees

 Learn specific techniques for dealing with defensiveness such as denial, anger, withdrawal and counterattacks

 Respond to Frequently Encountered Employee Fallacies (“FEEFS”)
